The Virtual Signing Ceremony of the Framework Agreement on Cooperation in Research and Development and Individual Project Agreements between Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute & Hospital and the German Cancer Research Center

In order to promote substantial cooperation between Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute & Hospital (TMUCIH) and the German Cancer Research Center(DKFZ), the two institutions held a Virtual Signing Ceremony of the Framework Agreement on Cooperation in Research and Development and initiated the Individual Project Agreements on May 11, 2021. This aimed to establish the bridge of "on-line academic exchange" by enabling close exchanges and interactions and giving a strong incentive to the bilateral exchanges and cooperation.

This video conference was attended by Prof. Jihui Hao, President of TMUCIH, Prof. Qiang Zhao and Prof. Kexin Chen, Vice President of TMUCIH, Lijun Zhang, Shasha Liu, Director of the Dept. of Foreign Affairs, and Project Managers: Prof.Zhaoxiang Ye, Director of the Dept. of Radiology, Prof. Tianqiang Song, Dept. of Hepatobiliary Cancer, and Prof. Li Bao, from the Key Laboratory of Breast Cancer Prevention and Therapy along with the other members of the research project team from TMUCIH. DKFZ was represented by Prof. Michael Baumann, Chairman and Scientific Director of DKFZ, Ursula Weyrich, Administrative Director of DKFZ and the Project Managers from DKFZ. At the video conference, Prof.Jihui Hao, President of TMUCIH and Prof. Michael Baumann, Chairman and Scientific Director of DKFZ, both delivered speeches and jointly reviewed the friendly cooperation and scientific research achievements. The two presidents signed the Framework Agreement on Cooperation in Research and Development on line, which marks a solid step for the two sides to promote substantial cooperation in scientific research and education.

The Leaders of both institutions signed the Framework Agreement on Cooperation in Research and Development

The Project Managers from both sides sign the Individual Agreements

The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) is a well-known biomedical research institution in Europe and across the world. It is mainly engaged in basic molecular research and the clinical treatment of cancer. The center benefits from talented people and the fruitful results of their research. Scientist Harald zur Hausen won the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and scientist Stefan Hell won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

TMUCIH and DKFZ signed a Memorandum of Understanding on November 17, 2018. In recent years, the two sides have actively promoted cooperation in medical care, scientific research, education and training and other areas. They have consistently strengthened cooperation and integrated each other’s strengths and resources on the basis of the original exchanges. They have further expanded the fields of cooperation in various ways through scientific research cooperation, personnel training, bilateral academic seminars and remote on-line teaching. In June 2019, the two hospitals successfully held the “Sino-German Round Table Symposium on Cancer Precision Medicine in the Era of Big Data”, which involved the exchange of progress in tumor clinical diagnosis and treatment, basic research and other disciplines, and achieved remarkable results. Through in-depth academic exchanges in this symposium, both institutions decided to establish the thematic sub-committees to promote the future joint research activities and set up the Collaborative Research Fund.

After the preliminary cooperation between the researchers from China and Germany, three research projects teams namely: Radiation Oncology Imaging, Functional Genomics and Pediatric Cancer, obtained the first set of scientific research project grants through the approval of the thematic sub-committees of the two institutes. By signing the Framework Agreement on Cooperation in Research and Development and Individual Project Agreements, the project teams from both sides officially launched scientific research cooperation which will provide bilateral support for their researchers in scientific research, scientific exchanges, personnel training and seminars.

At the virtual meeting, the three research teams each reported on their respective scientific research cooperation projects, and the project managers of the Chinese and German institutes exchanged and discussed the project content. The two sides hope to continually promote more comprehensive and stable scientific research cooperation into basic and clinical cancer research  through the joint signing of the scientific research cooperation agreement.

Our hospital has always aimed to be at the forefront of the world tumor science and technology development, and has actively built an international scientific research cooperation platform. It is expected that through engaging in scientific research cooperation with DKFZ, we will constantly refine the direction of discipline development, strengthen the construction of discipline connotation, and further promote the international cooperation of our hospital to a more wide-ranging and deeper level. We hope that through the joint efforts of scientists and professionals, both sides will further integrate and optimize their strengths and resources to facilitate substantive multidisciplinary cooperation and exchanges, create new cooperation achievements and boost the development of high-quality academic exchanges and cooperation, resulting in mutual benefit and win-win cooperation for the two institutions.
